People: Chris Condos & Suzanne Hagins, Owners & Winemakers

Horse & Plow Winery is owned by husband and wife team, Chris Condos and Suzanne Hagins. Together, they draw on their different backgrounds and talents to craft original wines from organic grapes. Chris and Suzanne started Horse & Plow in 2008 to merge the best of old and new world techniques and produce authentic, hand-crafted wines. Utilizing organic farming, small lot fermentation and traditional techniques, they make balanced, food friendly and site specific wines.

Their organic vineyards dot the North Coast of California; including Sonoma, Napa & Mendocino Counties. They work exclusively with growers who are committed to superior quality by using certified organic and/ or biodynamic techniques. These sustainable practices allow Chris and Suzanne to craft wines with greater complexity and sense of place, while caring for worker health and the environment.

Organic doesn’t stop when the grapes get to the winery; their wines are made naturally with no synthetic nutrients or additives, no GMO’s, are vegan and contain low sulfites.

Because of the care and time put into every bottle of wine, quantities are limited.

About Chris Condos: Chris is a California native, but only 3 generations from Greece. His Grandfathers made wine, his Dad sold wine, and Chris does both! Chris studied Plant Ecology at SF State and Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis, before beginning his career at Pine Ridge Winery. He started Vinum Cellars in Oakville in 1997, which currently produces 30,000 cases of wine. He has also been the consulting winemaker for Kathryn Kennedy Winery since 1998. Chris’s past experiences, hard work and talent as a winemaker are evident in every bottle of Horse & Plow.

About Suzanne Hagins: Suzanne was born in Savannah, Georgia. Her interest in wine developed while working in fine restaurants in Charleston, South Carolina. The mystery and romance of food and wine led her to France, and her first harvest at Comte Armand in Pommard. She moved to California in 2000, working at DeLoach, David Bruce and Goldeneye wineries. Suzanne had a small, pinot noir brand called Lutea for seven years, before starting the Gardener with Horse & Plow. Suzanne takes a sensory approach to winemaking, and strives to capture the more esoteric aspects of time and place in each vintage.

Rating: 87

This wine blends 40% Pinot Blanc, 32% Pinot Gris and 28% Riesling to nice effect, producing a crisp, balanced wine soft in lemon and pear notes. With toned acidity, it's a long-lasting quaff ready for shellfish or oysters plucked right out of the bay.
