Founded in 1890, Bodegas Riojanas treasures more than a century of winemaking tradition in its Cenicero winery. Its corners are steeped in history and the current generation (the 5th) continues to cherish the traditions set forth by past generations. The legacy is their commitment to the best quality and unique personality to their wines.

The original winery was located in Cenicero, at the heart of Rioja Alta, on a land that stretches from the river Najerilla to the Ebro, 20 km from Logroño on the N-232 road. The new winery is located 20 km from Cenicero, in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a town on the left bank of the River Ebro, also in Rioja Alta. Bodegas Riojanas controls more than 300 hectares of the best vineyards in Cenicero, San Vicente de la Sonsierra and nearby municipalities. The different plots of vineyards are situated on clay-limestone soils of Miocene origin, suitable for producing the highest quality grapes. Rioja’s quintessential grape variety is Tempranillo, but Bodegas Riojanas also owns one of the largest surface areas dedicated to Mazuelo and Graciano in the wine region. These grape varieties bring more personality to the wines produced.

Rioja was the first Spanish wine region to obtain DO status, in 1925. In 1991, it was promoted to DOCa (Qualified Designation of Origin), a higher category reserved for wines maintaining a proven consistency and quality over a long period of time.

Bodegas Riojanas 2001 'Monte Real' Gran Reserva, Rioja DOCa
Rating: 89

The 2001 Monte Real Gran Reserva has notes of jammy fruit intermixed with tertiary aromas of truffles and spices, a medium-bodied palate, and flavors of strawberry jam, with good acidity and length. Drink 2014-2017.

The 2001 Vina Albina Gran Reserva displays elegant balsamic aromas of sandalwood, tobacco, tea leaves and leather. The medium-bodied palate is supple, still holding onto some juicy fruit, with roasted flavors and a good finish. This is a very good Gran Reserva, but I’d have expected a little more complexity for such a great vintage. Drink 2014-2020.

(80% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano; aged for 30 months in American oak): Bright red. Musky cherry pit and rhubarb scents, with complicating notes of vanilla and pipe tobacco. Smoky and broad on the palate, offering lively red fruit flavors and hints of mocha and coconut. Finishes sweet and long, with resonating smokiness and soft, harmonious tannins.

(all Tempranillo fermented in large, open-top steel vats): Brilliant ruby. Pungent redcurrant and cherry on the nose, with a peppery quality contributing lift and focus. Firm bitter cherry and rose pastille flavors show very good concentration, with juicy acidity adding cut. Aeration brings up deeper blackberry and licorice notes that linger on the taut, youthfully tannic finish.
