Winemaking Notes: Grapes for Riojanas 'Canchales' are sourced from 35-55 year old vineyards around Cenicero (Rioja Alta). Classic vinification with stemmed, crushed grapes using state-of-the art techniques and whole grape fermentation in open vats. Joven style with only brief aging in tank.

About the Name: 'Canchales' is a nickname. Back in the 40's, one of the winery’s distributors in Madrid, was crazy about Jai-Alai. He suggested a new wine called Canchales, as "Cancha" means court.

Bodegas Riojanas 2011 'Canchales' Joven, Rioja DOCa
Rating: 89

(all Tempranillo fermented in large, open-top steel vats): Brilliant ruby. Pungent redcurrant and cherry on the nose, with a peppery quality contributing lift and focus. Firm bitter cherry and rose pastille flavors show very good concentration, with juicy acidity adding cut. Aeration brings up deeper blackberry and licorice notes that linger on the taut, youthfully tannic finish.
