People: Guy Davis, Owner & Winemaker

Davis Family Vineyards is located on a ridge top in the center of California's renowned Russian River Valley. They have Zinfandel vines that were planted in 1896, and young hillside plantings of Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Chardonnay. They also make a few barrels of Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon with grapes from friends like the Dutton Family and Lewelling, who have deliciously distinctive vineyards. Guy Davis began his artisan winemaking career in the late 80's working in the vineyards and winery at Sky Vineyards at the top of the Mayacamas Mountains. He lustfully furthered his knowledge and craft by working with some of the best producers in California, and France, as well as Argentina and New Zealand. Add to that 10 years of continuing education at UC Davis and in their own Russian River Vineyards, they arrive at their current quest for palatial perfection. They are a small family winery that thinks everything matters from vineyard to bottle making only small lots of wine and literally handcraft each and every one. They believe wine is an essential element in a rich and passionate life. It adds an extra layer of flavors to both meals and to friendships. And like a lover, wine has a sensuality of perfumed aromas and silky, supple textures—endless charm and character that brings many pleasures to our senses and our spirits!

Davis Family Vineyards 2011 Estate Chardonnay, Russian River Valley
Rating: 86

The medium-bodied, straightforward 2011 Chardonnay Russian River reveals a pleasant note of caramelized citrus. A solidly made white in a troublesome year, it is best consumed over the next 1-3 years for its up-front fruitiness.

It exhibits a medium ruby color, a pleasant earthy, berry fruitiness, surprisingly sweet cherry and red currant flavors, velvety tannins, and a soft, round, beguiling personality. This charming effort is an excellent example of a 2011 Pinot Noir. Drink it over the next several years.

Delicacy of structure, yet complexity of flavor, combine to make this a lovely Pinot Noir. It's dry and quite tart in acidity, creating a mouthwatering quality that frames sour-cherry candy and persimmon flavors. The wine is a barrel selection from the winery's Laguna-area vineyard. It's delicious enough to drink now, but really wants until 2020 to mellow. Cellar Selection.
