Mendel Malbec is Matt Kramer's 2010 Wine of the Year (Wine Spectator)
Country of Origin: Argentina
Location: Lujan de Cuyo
People: Anabelle Sielecki, Owner | Roberto de la Mota, Winemaker
Supplier: http://www.vineconnections.com

Mendel Winery embodies the union of Roberto de la Mota - one of Argentina's most respected and experienced winemakers - with a nearly century-old Argentine family whose sole objective is to produce wines of unquestionable, superior quality that express the character of their very old Malbec and Cabernet vineyards in Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina. They choose the best lots from their almost 80-year-old vineyards, and every artisan winemaking step is rigorously performed, from careful bunch sorting to fermentation in small tanks to aging in the finest French oak. Ancient vineyards, passionate people, experience and friendship are all blended to create these remarkable wines. Mendel is the first name of the owner's father, a man who came to Argentina as a young immigrant and who ended up a successful businessman in several different industries. He was also a man who came to love the finest things that life could offer, particularly wine. His children honor their father by seeking perfection in their wines with his name on the label.

Quick Facts:
-One of Argentina's most acclaimed winemakers
-Son of Mendoza winemaking legend, Raul de la Mota.
-Two top-quality old-vine reds from the best lots of some of Argentina's oldest vines

Named a Top Producer (5*) by Jay Miller for 2011

"
Alongside Nicolas Catena, the late Raul de la Mota was considered the forefather of modern Argentinean viticulture and his son, Roberto de la Mota, has himself become one of the country’s most respected vignerons. It was Roberto’s knowledge and expertise that Mendel’s proprietor, Anabelle Sielecki, whose father immigrated to Argentina, sought when looking for a partner, and it was a pleasure to meet both at this small winery. The first thing to catch my eye was a sign indicating the age of the vines in Lujan de Cuyo. Mendel is a bijou winery that does not rely on modern technology to conjure impressive wines. They come from the small, specially selected ancient parcels that are combined with a simple, intuitive approach to winemaking courtesy of Roberto and vineyard manager, Santiago Mayorga. These are splendid, intellectual Mendoza wines. The highlight for this writer was the fabulous Mendel Malbec rather than the premium Unus and Finca Remota. But I begin with the solitary white, one well worth seeking out." - Wine Advocate 10/2012

Mendel 2011 'Unus' (Bordeaux Blend), Mendoza
Rating: 92

Saturated, bright ruby. Blackberry, black plum, cocoa powder and spicecake on the perfumed nose. Suave, sappy and broad, showing excellent concentration and a restrained sweetness to its intense flavors of dark fruits, cocoa powder and minerals. I like the combination of density and energy here. Very long on the aftertaste, with ripe tannins thoroughly buffered by fruit. Drink now or over the next ten years.

Pure and racy, offering juicy acidity to the crushed raspberry, black cherry, woodsy spice and licorice notes. A touch candied with dusty tannins marking the finish. Drink now.

Deep cherry crimson. Restrained dark fruit with a mineral/coal-like aroma I associate with the Douro and granite even though the soils here are sandy clay over stony gravel, and a light floral note. Creamy sweetness and spice of oak wraps around but does not overwhelm the fruit. Rich but not at all fat. Dry finesse to the tannins, just a hint of vanilla/chocolate on the finish, which is dry and leaves your mouth feeling clean. You could broach it now but it will benefit from longer in bottle.

Rating: 90(+?)

Bright medium ruby. Musky cassis, plum and dark chocolate on the nose, lifted by minty and mineral nuances. Fine-grained and firm in the mouth, with a restrained sweetness to its black raspberry and smoky mineral flavors; conveys an impression of strong extract. Nicely integrated acidity extends the finish, which features chewy, ripe tannins and excellent lift.

Good full medium ruby. Blackberry, licorice and nutty oak on the inviting nose. Concentrated and sappy on the palate, with a creamy quality to the blackberry, black plum and fig flavors. Harmonious acidity gives the wine grip while accenting its seamless texture. Finishes with firm tannic spine and very good length.
