Tasting Notes: Incredible dark red/purple color. The aromas of sweet French oak and espresso get more complex with every swirl of the glass, unveiling black plum, ripe raspberry, and violet aromas. The wine is full-bodied, dense, deep and chewy with flavors of black raspberry, plums, roasted herbs, and mint. This beauty could be enjoyed now with a nice ribeye steak or leg of lamb since it shows incredible balance for such a concentrated wine.

The Story: Proprietor and long-time wine lover, Anabelle Sielecki, diligently tracked down the very best talent Argentina had to offer when seeking Mendel's winemaker, and with utmost charm and perseverance brought Roberto de la Mota on board as her partner. Roberto, son of legendary winemaker Raul de la Mota, has an impressive winemaking record and a lifetime of winemaking education and achievement. Together, they choose the best blocks from her family’s ancient vineyards, and every artisan winemaking step is rigorously performed. Anabelle’s father came to Argentina as a young immigrant and worked hard to become a successful businessman in several different industries. He was a man who came to love the finest things that life could offer, particularly wine. Anabelle honors her father by seeking perfection in the wine that carries his first name, Mendel, on the label.

Mendel 2011 Malbec, Mendoza
Rating: 89

Pure and racy, offering juicy acidity to the crushed raspberry, black cherry, woodsy spice and licorice notes. A touch candied with dusty tannins marking the finish. Drink now.

Deep cherry crimson. Restrained dark fruit with a mineral/coal-like aroma I associate with the Douro and granite even though the soils here are sandy clay over stony gravel, and a light floral note. Creamy sweetness and spice of oak wraps around but does not overwhelm the fruit. Rich but not at all fat. Dry finesse to the tannins, just a hint of vanilla/chocolate on the finish, which is dry and leaves your mouth feeling clean. You could broach it now but it will benefit from longer in bottle.

Bright medium ruby. Musky cassis, plum and dark chocolate on the nose, lifted by minty and mineral nuances. Fine-grained and firm in the mouth, with a restrained sweetness to its black raspberry and smoky mineral flavors; conveys an impression of strong extract. Nicely integrated acidity extends the finish, which features chewy, ripe tannins and excellent lift.
