Mauro Olivier started Mayu in 2005 as an independent company of the Olivier family group. His family was the first to bring winemaking to the Elqui Valley. They honor the place and its history with the name of the winery - "Mayu" is the Incan word for the Milky Way's river of stars.

Mauro Olivier started working the family vineyards for the table grape production at a young age; later he was involved with the Pisco production (the national Chilean spirit) and in 2000 the first Carmenere and Syrah plantings and finally in 2005 he decided to set up his own wine business.

The focus of ViƱa Mayu is to transform a new region with enormous potential into a vineyard producing premium wines with unique style and personality. The Mayu vineyards are located in different sectors of the Valley.

Location: Elqui Valley borders the Atacama Desert, the best place in the world for stargazing because there is so little water vapor in the atmosphere. Elqui is one of the newest regions for producing wine in Chile; long home to the best Pisco grapes, they have successfully ventured into the extreme terroir over the past 15 years.

Mayu 2012 Carmenere/Syrah, Elqui Valley
Rating: 88

Bright ruby. Floral red and dark berry scents are complicated by notes of licorice and rooty sassafras. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and blackcurrant flavors that pick up a smoky quality with air. Closes spicy and smooth, with subtle tannins adding shape.
