Duval-Leroy: The Spirit of Independence Article (Wine Spectator 2012)
Country of Origin: France
Location: Vertus
People: Carol Duval-Leroy, President | Sandrine Logette-Jardin, Chef de Cave (Winemaker)

Duval-Leroy is a large family owned Champagne house headquartered in Vertus in the Cote de Blancs. Since 1991 it has been headed by a strong lady of Champagne, Carole Duval-Leroy. Carol Duval-Leroy, president of Champagne Duval-Leroy and of Wine Association of the Champagne region, represents modernity, rigor and self-abnegation.

It was in 1859 that the families of Duval and Leroy joined together. Two creative spirits, a vine-grower and a champagne merchant, began by creating a unique style which everyone could recognize. Their objective was to build an identity for Duval-Leroy bringing together a world, a taste and a terroir, not just an ordinary brand. If today, the House of Duval-Leroy is the last major independent family Champagne House, it is undoubtedly thanks to its pioneering spirits, and their open-mindedness.

A common and very distinctive feature of the house style in comparison to other larger Champagne houses is the high proportion of Chardonnay used in the various cuvees, which is a factor of the company's extensive holdings of Premier and Grand Cru Chardonnay vineyards. The key word is freshness, which is a theme running through the range and is very much an expression of the terroir associated with Chardonnay grown in chalky soils in the Cotes de Blancs.

There's a creamy edge to the quince, biscuit, honey and ginger flavors in this well-cut Champagne, which help to balance the firm acidity. Vibrant and expressive, with a zesty finish. Drink now through 2014

Champagne Duval-Leroy (375 ml) NV 'Lady Rose' Sec Rose, Champagne AOC
Rating: 89

In the past, I have not always been overly impressed with this house's –Lady Ros_â€ù, which is finished off as a Sec and is fairly sweet on the backend. Some past releases have been a tad sweet-sour in style, but the most recent release is spot on and carries off this more difficult style with aplomb. The nose offers up a complex blend of sweet cranberries, smoke, blood orange, fine soil tones and wheat toast. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, crisp and shows off lovely balance for carrying a fairly high dosage, with elegant mousse, crisp acids and good length and grip on the finish. Good juice. 2011-2018

Bright gold. Complex aromas of fresh pit and orchard fruits, with bright floral and chalky mineral qualities adding lift and focus. Meyer lemon and bitter pear skin flavors are complemented by chamomile and buttery brioche, with a hint of tarragon in the background. Closes smooth, smoky and very long, with bracing citrus fruit qualities adding bite. All of the chardonnay in this blend comes from grand cru sites in Chouilly, Avize, Oger and Mesnil-sur-Oger.
