Donald L. Bryant, Jr. has made his label synonymous with the prized terrior of Pritchard Hill. His land overlooks Lake Hennessey and St. Helena, and Bryant is world-renowned for his rich, signature style California Cabernet. Optimal microclimate conditions prevail at this hillside vineyard, which receives cooling western winds combined with 60% morning sun and 40% afternoon sun in the summer months. The modern, gravity-fed winery designed by the acclaimed architect Gyo Obata in 2002, aims for total quality control of the winemaking process. Complete with its own special bottling room and custom-made equipment, the wine team can bottle wines on the day the winemaker judges to be most appropriate. The wine is then placed in the attached 8,000 sq. ft. cave to ensure proper aging of the wine until it is shipped to the customer.

Michel Rolland is the consulting oenologist. Vineyard Manager David Abreu skillfully maintains the vineyard.

Bryant Family Vineyard 2010 'DB4' (Red Bordeaux Blend), Napa Valley
Rating: 94

The 2010 DB4 is insanely beautiful. Crushed rocks, plums, cinnamon and licorice jump from the glass from this striking, delineated wine. In 2010, the DB4 has a level of pure energy and vibrancy that is missing in the 2009, most likely because it also includes declassified lots from the BETTINA. This is a great showing from Don Bryant and his team. In most cellars, the DB4 would be the top wine, but here it is the second label. Top flight Napa Cabernet is seldom inexpensive, but this is just about as good as it gets for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. Antonio Galloni/The Wine Advocate # 204

The 2011 Bettina is a bit closed in on itself. Dark red cherry, plum, licorice, smoke and tobacco emerge over time. Today the 2011 is a bit compact, which is not surprising considering the vintage. With time in the glass, the 2011 starts to find its typical explosive, dark personality, but today some slightly angular contours remain. The blend is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.

Is it possible that the 2011 DB4 might turn out better than the two flagships? Sage, rosemary, tobacco, menthol, sweet spices and red berries meld together in an exquisite, gracious wine loaded with finesse and class. Bright red berries, rose petals, mint and crushed rocks add energy on the finish. The style is medium in body, but there is plenty of energy and cut to ensure years of fine drinking. Today, the DB4 challenges Bryant's top wines. I am not sure that will always be the case, but today, the DB4 is terrific. In 2011, the blend heavily favors Merlot, which was the strongest variety in that year across the board. The blend is 35% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot.

Bryant's 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Bryant Family Vineyard is incredibly silky, polished and vibrant. Sweet red berries, mint, wild flowers and crushed rocks flow across the palate in an energetic, tense wine loaded with focus and cut. The 2011 is a bit understated relative to previous years, but its balance is terrific. High-toned floral and savory notes add an attractive upper register to the finish. I won't be surprised if the 2011 flies under the radar for a while. Wines from this property have a way of developing beautifully in bottle.
