Country of Origin: France
Location: Madiran
People: Francois Laplace, Owner | Jean-Luc Laplace, Winemaker

The Laplace family has been at the forefront of Madiran production for three generations, since before the small appellation in the southwest of France came to be officially recognized in 1948 (when there was just 50 hectares of vineyard under production compared to the 1650 hectares today). Federic Laplace was a pioneer in regional winemaking, and his grandchildren, Francois, Bernard, Jean-Luc, and Marie have carried on his tradition of carefully crafted, Tannat-based wines.

The vineyard covers 35 hectares, and the Belle Epoque castle that crowns it was once owned by the writer Joseph Peyre. Home to both an oceanic and mountain climate, it generally sees a rainy spring, hot summer, and sunny autumn, which tends to lead to later harvests, and ripe, rich grapes. The vineyard’s soil is a mix of clay, limestone, gravel, and quartz, with south-facing slopes. The family makes every attempt to minimize pesticides and practice eco-friendly viticulture.

Chateau d'Aydie (500 ml) 2009 'Maydie' Tannat Vin de Liqueur, Madiran AOC
Rating: 90

Made from Tannat with added alcohol to stop the fermentation, this is a sweet, deliciously rich wine. It shows a fine balance between fruity acidity, red-fruit jelly flavors and layers of tannin from the Tannat. It will certainly age over the years.
