Decanter May 2013 - Filippi Rising Star
Country of Origin: Italy
Location: Soave
People: Filippi & Visco Family, Owners | Filippo Filippi, Winemaker

Filippi is a new mark with antique roots dating back to the 1300 century when the Tuscan family of Count Alberti moved to Castelcerino. At the beginning of 1900 the Visco Family became the owner of the villa and of the plantation-terrain of Count Alberti (cousins of the Filippi) to officially initiate the activity of winemaking. This union developed an absolute passion for winemaking, and the villa became richer in competence, creativeness and innovation. Today the wines are a reinterpretation of the great tradition of Soave, satisfying the palate of passionate experts.

The uncontaminated nature harmony enclosed by bushes is the ideal vineyard scenery. Only here you can live the magic of a unique land which gives birth to a wine famous in the world. The volcanic nature of the basaltic rock and the calcareous rock assures sapidity and particular salinity. The 320 to 400 meters above sea level altitude and the presence of the bush creates an ideal microclimate.

Conforming to the exposure and climate characteristics, the various pieces of land host selected vines plants for the production of various wines for that specific area: Soave, Soave Superiore D.O.C.G., Recioto di Soave D.O.C.G. In the Valpolicella area they have begun a limited production of Amarone, produced from selective grapes. The philosophy which guides the activity is simple and coherent: everything happens in conformity to nature, without intensive straining and overworking of the terrain, everything in performed in the respect of the law and discipline with a utmost attention to quality.

Beyond Barolo and Brunello by Tom Hyland (2012)
"Filippo Filippi is one of a small group of artisan producers in Soave that are crafting offerings that are several steps above the light, refreshing wine many people still associate this area with. Filippi is constantly experimenting with various styles-some of his wines are made from late harvest grapes-and the results are quite special. I first encountered his wines when I tasted his 2008 Castelcerino Soave, which had a chalkiness in the finish that was very similar to a first-rate Chablis: it was then I knew I had to visit this estate and find out more about this winemaker and his products."

Filippi 2011 'Castelcerino' Soave DOC
Rating: 88

Two impressive Soaves include the 2011 Soave Castelcerino, a 3,000-case, stainless steel-aged, crisp, seriously endowed, surprisingly lush textured and expansively flavored effort. This dry, medium-bodied white is loaded with notes of caramelized grapefruit, orange zest, lemon oil and wet rocks. Drink this attractive Soave over the next several years.
