Since its inception, in 1945 by Josep Arrufi, making small quantities of well-crafted wines with passion, love and respect for the land and the vines is what Celler Vinos Pinol is all about. This tradition continues to this day with Josefina Pinol and her son, winemaker Juanjo Galcera Pinol, the 4th generation at the helm. Celler Vinos Pinol owns 100 acres of carefully tended vines, in and around the medieval town of Batea, in the Terra Alta district of the Tarragona province.

Located a few miles south and west of Priorat, within the Terra Alta DO in Catalunya's Tarragona province in northeastern Spain. The winemaking tradition, in this remote region, dates back to the 13th century. The winery and vineyards are in Batea, which lies at 1168ft in altitude.

What makes Vinos Pinol unique? Small production wines from low yielding older vines using ecologically friendly methods and manual harvesting in the estate's organically grown vineyards. Producing terroir driven, deeply colored, well-structured, well-balanced wines. Family owned estate vineyards. Consistent quality year after year. Talented young winemaker Juanjo Galcera Pinol's blending philosophy.

Vinos Pinol (500 ml) 2011 'Josefina Pinol' Dulce Blanco (Garnacha Blanca), Terra Alta DO
Rating: 90

The 2011 Josefina Pinol Vi Dolc is a late-harvest, sweet, fortified mistelle with 15% alcohol and 220 grams of sugar. It has a bright orange color and an explosive nose of candied orange peel, balsamic notes of bay leaf and white pepper with hints of green and black olives, quite complex and different. The palate is unctuous and round, very sweet, with low acidity, good integration of the alcohol and quite sweet. It should be indestructible. Drink now-2025.

Vinos Pinol 2008 'Mather Teresina' Tinto, Terra Alta DO
Rating: 93

Opaque ruby. Aromas of cherry compote, dark berries, pipe tobacco and woodsmoke, with a spicy overtone. Juicy, sappy and impressively concentrated, with serious density to its lush black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors. A lush, palate-coating wine that finishes with gentle tannins and excellent persistence.

(50% Garnacha, 20% Carinena, 10% Merlot, 10% Syrah and 10% Tempranillo; aged for six months in French, American and Hungarian oak): Deep ruby. Closes sweet and long, with dusty tannins and very good focus.

Vinos Pinol 2010 Finca Morenillo, Terra Alta DO
Rating: 94

The 2010 Finca Morenillo is produced with extremely old vines of Morenillo, the local variety from Terra Alta (also known as Mando there and elsewhere) aged for 15 months in new French oak. The wine has a bright ruby cherry color with some orange tints around the edges, and a complex, subtle and elegant nose of red fruits and flowers intermixed with forest floor notes and plenty of sweet and brown spices. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins and supple flavors of pomegranate and blood orange with a spicy finish. A very elegant and different Terra Alta. Drink now-2020.

Round, sweet and open-knit, offering juicy raspberry and cherry flavors with a hint of allspice. Supple tannins come on late and give grip to the finish, which features tangy red fruit and white pepper qualities.
