Robert Talbott Vineyards is the story of one family's commitment to strict standards of excellence, belief in the value of hard work, recognition of the wisdom of simplicity, and devotion to the family as life's center. For nearly a quarter century, the Talbott family has built its reputation on the belief that in order to excel, you must focus on doing one thing right, with absolute commitment to excellence. This conviction led Talbott to produce only Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from its estate vineyards in Monterey County. Crafted using grapes from two of the region's most esteemed vineyard areas: the Santa Lucia Highlands, where Talbott's Sleepy Hollow is located, and the Carmel Valley, home to Talbott's prestigious Diamond T Vineyard, Talbott wines have earned a reputation for elegance and aging potential. Using traditional, age-old methods, they produce Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that exhibit the finest possible expression of the grapes grown in their carefully managed vineyards. They celebrate and foster their own unique style, and temporary fads or trends never impair their vision. The wines are a testimony to the earth upon which they are grown, and the Talbott's protect and preserve the natural abundance of that earth. They plant and nurture the grape varieties they love and make their wines with a passion grown out of that love.

Dan took over for Sam Balderas, who retired in March 2008. Lovers of great Chardonnay and Pinot Noir will likely know Dan by reputation. A gifted winemaker with more than three decades of experience, Dan began his career in 1980 at Dry Creek Vineyard. Throughout the '80s and '90s, he honed his skills making Chardonnay and Pinot Noir working at Dehlinger Winery, and later as the winemaker for Domaine Carneros. In 1998, Dan became the winemaker and general manager for Chalone Winery, where he worked until 2007.

Robert Talbott Vineyards 2011 'Logan' Pinot Noir, Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, Santa Lucia Highlands
Rating: 89

Dark red. Pungent aromas of black raspberry, bitter cherry, spicecake and dried flowers. Smooth and broad on entry, then a bit tighter in the middle, with a subtle floral quality to the raspberry, cherry and bitter chocolate flavors. Finishes sappy and long, with firming tannins and a hint of cherry pit.

Juicy and lively, with upfront fruit and texture, the 2011 Pinot Noir Logan seems also geared for immediate gratification with its supple cherry fruit and spice, medium-bodied richness and vibrant acidity. It too is a solid value that offers good typicity and should be consumed over the coming 2-3 years. Drink now-2016.

Light gold. Seductively perfumed bouquet of poached pear, pit fruit nectar, toasty lees, honey and vanilla. Deeply pitched orchard and pit fruit flavors are complicated by clove, toasty brioche and honeysuckle, with a bright mineral note adding lift and bite. Shows intense spiciness on the finish, with the toasty note echoing.

The 2011 Chardonnay Diamond T Vineyard is decadent stuff. All barrel-fermented and aged for 14 months on lees in 45% new French oak, it’s a rich, full-flavored effort that stays balanced and pure, with knockout detail and clarity on the palate. Offering up notes of grilled peaches, toast, honey, vanilla custard and flower oil, it’s a full-bodied, balanced white that has great underlying acidity and focus. Drink it over the coming 3-4 years. Drink now-2017.

Deep ruby. Cherry-vanilla, smoky Indian spices and rose oil on the perfumed, oak-accented nose. Powerful bitter cherry and blackberry flavors gain energy and spiciness with air, picking up a sexy five-spice powder nuance and a touch of tangy orange pith. Smooth, sweet and focused on the youthfully tannic finish, which features suave vanilla bean and cherry compote qualities.

Dense and backwards, the 2011 Pinot Noir Diamond T Vineyard spent 14 months in 80% new French oak. Showing ripe plum, licorice, oak and earth aromas at present, it opens up nicely on the palate with full-bodied richness, superb mid-palate depth and solid length through the finish. All of the components are here, but it needs another 2-3 years of bottle age to gain complexity. It should have an easy decade or more of longevity. Drink 2015-2021.

Light gold. Aromas of fresh pear and melon, with a honeyed aspect adding depth. Juicy and open-knit, offering plump orchard fruit flavors braced by a touch of lemon curd. Closes with good sappy cling, an echo of bitter citrus zest and spicy persistence. This wine's balance of richness and energy makes it highly flexible with food; it's also quite easy to drink by itself.

Pale gold. Poached pear, Meyer lemon, buttered toast and white flowers on the deeply perfumed nose. Smooth, open-knit orchard fruit and orange flavors stain the palate, picking up a smoky nuance with aeration. Shows excellent clarity and punch on the mineral-tinged finish, which leaves suave floral and citrus fruit notes behind.

Brilliant ruby-red. Ripe cherry and black raspberry on the fragrant, smoke-tinged nose. Sappy and expansive, offering gently sweet dark berry flavors that are sharpened by peppery spice and orange pith nuances. Shows good energy and a seamless character on the gently tannic finish, which clings with very good tenacity and subtle spiciness.
