"In the heart of the appellation Gigondas (300 meters from the village), the Chateau de Saint Cosme is the oldest estate in Gigondas with its Gallo-Roman fermentation vats perfectly preserved. The property has been in our family since 1490 and we have been vignerons for 14 generations.

We have 15 has of old vines (average 60 years old) with a yield of around 27Hl/Ha. We produce only Gigondas wines from our vineyards which encircle the Chateau: the terroir is apparently homogeneous but it's actually geologically very diverse as the Dentelles de Montmirail makes it very complicated. Saint Cosme is exceptionally located at the crossing of two geological faults, which is very rare. This gives us an extraordinary diversity of soils. Our microclimate is cool and late ripening. Our Gigondas have the ability to be powerful and refined at the same time. The Saint Cosme's Chapel, located in the heart of our vineyard is a pure example of roman art. Very simple and well-balanced, everyone should take five minutes to climb the little hill and visit it.

It was with the "savoir-faire" of a vigneron we created in 1997 a negociant activity that one could call a "Negociant-Vigneron". During my various travels and tastings in the Rhône Valley, I often thought that many great terroirs were under-exploited. I really liked some locations and I wanted to try. My wish was to become a negociant which would work with the spirit of a vigneron using ancient methods. This was meaning: being and remaining a small producer, be followed by winemakers having the same ambition, transport my wines in casks to avoid to rack them and kill their fruit, trying to do only nice things every day.

At Saint Cosme we usually work 'à la main.' I want to make wines which express their terroir with purity and personality. I want to make balanced wines with a great ability to age." - Louis Barroul

Saint Cosme 2012 'Little James Basket Press' Blanc, Vin de Pays d'Oc
Rating: 87

The 2012 Little James Basket Press Blanc is a blend of equal parts Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc that’s aged all in tank. Showing the Viognier nicely, with plenty of apricot, citrus and marmalade notes, this soft, supple and decidedly delicious white should be purchased by the case as a mid-week drinker.

A solid, gutsy version, with notes of plum paste and black currant preserves studded with hints of licorice and singed vanilla. Briar and tobacco details check in on the finish, which shows pleasant grip. Drink now.

A step up, the 2012 Cotes du Rhone is almost all Syrah that comes from higher elevation vineyards in Vinsobres and the Gard region (western side of the Rhone River). Offering big, bright berry fruits, pepper, olive and hints of meatiness, it is a medium-bodied, elegant and rock-solid Cotes du Rhone that has loads of character. It’s a serious value to drink over the coming 4-5 years.

The NV Little Basket Press (all Grenache) offers good pepper, spice and herbs in a medium-bodied, easy drinking package. It’s a solid, bistro-styled red to drink over the coming couple of years.

(all grenache, made from a solera that was started in 1999; 50% of the blend is from the most recent vintage, in this case 2010): Bright purple. Precise, aromatic nose of cassis, cherry and lavender. Tightly wound on the palate, with a firm mineral spine giving clarity and lift to the dark berry and bitter cherry flavors. Finishes with gentle tannins and good focus. Quite grown-up for an entry-level wine; I've been seeing quite a bit of this wine in restaurants around the country lately.

The non-vintage Vin de Table Little James Basket Press is created from a solera system based on 50% from 2008 and the rest from older vintages. It is always 100% Grenache and is finished with a screw cap. This beauty offers lots of spicy, peppery, black cherry and even blacker fruits along with medium body, a tasty, satisfying style and a remarkably low price. It is best drunk in its first 1-2 years of life

Under the Saint-Cosme label, his non-vintage Little James Basket Press Vin de Table is one of the top bargain picks available. It is based on a solera system, and the newest incarnation is composed of 50% from 2007 and the rest older vintages. It represents a confiture of black raspberries and cherries interwoven with pepper, spice, and earth. Deep, fruity, round, and pure, it is an attractive red to drink over the next year or so
