The Finger Lakes Terroir: Ice Age glaciers carved the narrow, deep Finger Lakes, creating ideal conditions for growing grapes.
The glaciers deposited a shallow layer of topsoil on sloping shale beds above the lakes, providing great drainage. The deep lakes have a strong climate moderating effect providing the vineyards protection from the extremes in weather. The growing season in the Finger Lakes averages 190 to 200 days.
Seneca Lake is the deepest of the Finger Lakes and covers a total area of 67 square miles. The lake bed extends below sea level (in some places in excess of 600 feet deep), maintaining a year-round temperature of 39.5 degrees F at 150 feet.
Vintage Notes: 2012 was a warmer than usual growing season in the Finger Lakes with low disease pressure and just enough rain for healthy growth and flavor development. This yielded Riesling with great concentration and flavors.
Winemaking Notes: The grapes for this wine come from three different vineyards on Seneca Lake including the Doyle Vineyard on the Eastern shore, originally planted by Finger Lakes Vinifera pioneer Charles Fournier in the 1970s. Following harvesting in the first week of October, the lots were vinifed
separately then blended in early January. The wine was bottled in late February 2013 with minimal filtration to preserve aromas and texture.
Tasting Notes: Aromas of tangerine and lime peel lead to stone fruit and mineral notes on the palate. The wine is dry with just enough fruit and residual sugar to achieve a delicious tension and freshness.
