Winemaking Notes: 'Les Marcottes' was the first cuvee the Tricot family produced in 2003. Grapes are harvested manually and are fermented using carbonic maceration. Aging occurs in oak or foudre. No filtration or fining. No sulfur is added.

About the Estate: Born in Anjou, Vincent Tricot left the Loire and attended Oenology School in Beaujolais in the early 1990’s. After graduating he stayed in the region and apprenticed in Brouilly from winemaker Patrick Coton. Around this time he met Marcel Lapierre and several other winemakers who were begining to attract attention to their non-interventionist style of winemaking. Vincent was moved by their wines and quickly decided that this was the path for him. In 2002, he moved with his wife and their 2 daughters to the village of Orcet in Auvergne. They purchased 4.5 ha of organic vines and planted an additional 6 ha. Vincent had learned that the region had one of the largest concentrations of pre-phylloxera vines in France and was eager for such a rare opportunity to work with these vines.

About the region: The Auvergne region is located in the middle of France and is surrounded by extinct volcanoes. It is one of the oldest wine growing areas of France but the wines are seldom found outside the region. The over-riding character of Auvergne is its semi-mountainous topography, whose influence is easily seen in the local wine styles. The higher altitude (most Auvergne vineyards lie between 1300 and 1650ft) and continental climate mean that average annual temperatures are noticeably lower than in nearby Burgundy and the famously warm Rhone Valley. This climate produces light, fresh and fruity wines, mostly from the Gamay grape.
