Winemaking Notes:
Handpicked grapes, vinified by gravity instead of pumps to preserve integrity. The juice is fermented in contact with skins for 15 to 20 days. The wine clarifies spontaneously with no need for filtration. Aged in lightly toasted oak barrels for 6 months, then in larger barrels for 12 months. It’s transferred to cement vats for 3 months, then bottle aged for 12 months.
Tasting Notes: Deep ruby red and garnet hues. Rich and powerful nose, elegant fruit with blackberry and plums, sweet wood. It feels full in the mouth with a firm tannic finish. Food Pairings: Grilled and roast meat, stewed red meat, game, mature hard cheese Try Roast Leg of Lamb with Rosemary and Garlic About Umbria: One of the smallest winemaking regions in Italy, producing only about a third of the wine as its neighbor, Tuscany, despite the fact that they share many geological and climatic similarities. Orvieto is the largest DOC, accounting for 80 percent of wine production, and is based on the white grape Trebbiano. Sangiovese is the main red varietal, while Gamay has a presence near Lake Trasimeno. The D.O.C. Rosso di Montefalco, a blend of Sangiovese and the native Sagrantino, does well in in hillside vineyards between Assisi and Terni. There is a distinctly Umbrian-style of white winemaking that blends Chardonnay and Grechetto for barrel fermentation. 90+pts (2008 vintage) Wine Advocate 8/2013 "The 2008 Montefalco Sagrantino is a massive wine with dark spice aromas,
ripe fruit, prune, tar leather and tobacco. The aromas transport you
somewhere exotic, like a spice marker in the Middle East. Gritty tannins
show some coarseness on the close. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2022."
