During the economic recession of 2001, and Owen Roe’s first couple vintages as a winery, Oregon Pinot Noir growers were facing hardship in selling their fruit, come harvest time. At Owen Roe, they wanted to help their farming friends and prevent missing out on such well-tended, beautiful fruit. They were presented with the difficult and costly purchasing of grapes to process, cellar and bottle, waiting several months to recover their costs on the finished wine. To overcome this obstacle, they decided to bring back the historical business practice of sharecropping, resulting in the aptly named wine, “Sharecropper’s.” This partnership meant that Owen Roe would take the fruit, make the wine and once it was sold, share the profits with their growers. This remains an important part of their history and due to the success of this wine; they are now able to pay their growers upfront.
About the Wine: Sharecropper's Pinot Noir was aged in
barrel for 8 months in roughly 15% new, 8% one-time filled and the rest
neutral, all French oak. The final blend is approximately 60% mixed
Dijon clone, 33% Pommard, with the majority of that coming from
Sojourner Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills and the remaining 7% is
Wadensvil clone. As far as sub-appellations are concerned, the breakdown
is similar to the clonal composition - roughly 60% Yamhill-Carlton
District, 30% Eola-Amity Hills and the remaining 10% from our own Anna's
Vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains AVA.
Tasting Notes: Aromas of savory toast, nutmeg and mint lead to a surprising mouthful of zingy acidity with bright and juicy marionberry and Rainier cherry flavors. Underlying layers of vanilla and baking spices like cinnamon and black licorice are structurally enhanced with candied fruit and brown sugar nuances. Ready to drink now, however this wine will cellar well for 5+ years.
