Monprivato is often the finest wine in Barolo in warmer years, and Mauro has once again delivered a gem in 2009. Remember his legendary 1985, 1990, 1997 and 2003? Fruit sourced from Monprivato in Castiglione Falletto. Aged 35 months in medium-large cask.

Winemaking Notes: All harvesting is by hand. No chemical pesticides or fertilizers are employed in the vineyards. Winemaking shows the utmost respect for tradition and the terroir - simple fermentation with the native yeasts, and long aging in large, neutral barrel. Fermentation for the Monprivato lasted for 20-25 days with a floating cap. The wine was aged for 35 months in medium-large casks.

About Monprivato Vineyard: Since its first vintage in 1970, Mauro's Barolo Monprivato has been one of the Langhe's most consistently magical wines. The secret to its greatness can be found not only in Mauro's winemaking but in a very special terroir. Approximately 15 acres in size on a slope facing soutwest in Castiglione Falletto, Monprivato's white and gray marl soils offer textbook conditions for Nebbiolo. Monprivato has been known as a special vineyard since at least the 1600s, and a quarter century ago Renato Ratti's epic classification of Barolo vineyards ranked Monprivato among Barolo's ten greatest vineyards, analogous to a Burgundy grand cru. In the 1980s, Mauro brought the complete site under his family's ownership, making it one of the few great Barolo vineyards to be entirely owned by a single domaine.

"The Mascarello family has grown grapes in Barolo for generations, founding its winery in 1881. Winemaker Mauro Mascarello and son Giuseppe ferment their Nebbiolo in oak vats, leaving it on the skins for roughly three weeks and then aging it three years in large oak casks. Monprivato is a top site covering a south-facing slope just outside the town of Castiglione Falleto, featuring white and gray marl soils that create wines of great perfume and structure, but also elegance."
