No filtration or fining; all harvesting and destemming by hand; maceration for 25 days; fermentation in open top fermenters. Oak Aging: A mix of barrique, demi-muid, and large cask is employed. New wood usage varies by year, with more in warm vintages and less in classic years.
About the Estate: Bierzo is located in northwestern Spain, in a relatively cool region of Spain. The best vineyards, located around the town of Corullón, possess all the attributes Alvaro looks for – steep hillside vineyards, old vines, and distinctive terroirs. In 1998, Alvaro teamed with his nephew Ricardo Perez, and launched this estate. The minute variations in soils and exposures across this zone immediately reminded the two of Burgundy’s Côte d’Or, or Piedmont’s Langhe hills. In Corullón, Alvaro and Ricardo believe they have found a unique combination of soils, old vines, and a distinctive variety that will yield their own grands crus.

Descendientes de Jose Palacios 2011 Moncerbal, Bierzo DO (wooden box)
Rating: 97
The 2011 Moncerbal is sheer reflection of the soil here, which is pure rock, pure slate: it imparts a very specific minerality to the wine. Extremely perfumed, it makes me think of quince, candied oranges, jasmine, almost the grape like sensation of Muscat, plenty of wild flowers and blueberry. A delirious nose, but not as exotic as other 2011s. Can you say the nose is blue? The palate displays round and silky tannins, a touch spicy (white pepper), with superb length. This is the one with the stronger personality. Drink 2016-2025.
