About 'The Kilmore' Label: This Romanesque doorway was a sculpted entrance to the ancient Trinity Island Abbey in County Cavan, Ireland. For hundreds of years the cloisters served as a refuge until they were destroyed by the forces of Oliver Cromwell. Here the great patriot Owen Roe O’Neill sought solace until he too breathed his last breath, also at the hands of Cromwell in 1649.

Vinification: This Yamhill-Carlton AVA blend is a beautiful marriage of two standout vineyards, Lennè and Merriman. Final production is approximately 800 cases. Aged in French oak barrels for 10 months (15% new oak, 30% one-time use and 55% neutral oak), the blend consists of 80% Dijon clones 113, 114, 115, 667 & 7 77 and 20% Pommard clones.

“Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. The nose offers an array of enticing aromas including raspberry, dried cherry, sassafras, leather saddle and sandalwood. Modest in weight, but highly flavorful, the wine offers notes of black cherry, black raspberry, spice, dark chocolate and coffee. Very gracious and easy to drink now, this beauty has the balance and tannic backbone to age effortlessly in the cellar for 5 to 10 years. I loved the 2010 vintage of this wine, and t is vintage is a hair better.”

“If this is a sign of the much-heralded 2012 vintage, devotees of Oregon Pinot Noir will enjoy drinking in the history. And here, winemaker David O’Reilly also offers a lesson in Irish history as the photo on the label is taken from Kilmore, which is near where legendary solider Owen Roe O’Neill died as Cromwell and his English forces swept across Ireland in brutal fashion in 1649. O’Reilly’s tribute here continues his work with Lenne Vineyard and Merriman Vineyard for this bottling that’s primarily of Dijon (80%) clonal fruit. The aromas bring hints of straw - berry, cherry fruit leather, milk chocolate, moist earth and allspice. Inside, it’s a supple and luscious drink of Bing cherry, dark strawberry and black currant. Good acidity, hocolaty tannins and a finish of dried strawberry combine to give it remarkable length.”
