Location: Though technically in the region of Castilla y León, Bierzo is often referred to as the “Gateway to Galicia.” The Bierzo DO has a unique microclimate which is a hybrid of the surrounding areas. On the one hand, it is similar to the climate of Galicia with regard to humidity and rainfall, and on the other it is has the hot, dry climate of Castile. This lends to wines that are more structured than the light, fruity reds of Galicia but leaner than the powerful styles of the Duero.
Winemaking Notes: Grapes are sourced from plots selected from about 50 hectares of organic vineyards that are tended by Richard and Ada. The vines are an average of 55 years old and situated on slate and quartz soils. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel followed by a brief 3 months of aging in barrels.

Mencias de Dos 2011 'de 2' Bierzo DO
Rating: 90
(fermented in stainless steel and aged for three months in small French oak barrels): Vivid ruby. Lively, sharply focused cherry and dark berry aromas are complemented by licorice and cracked pepper. Mineral-laced bitter cherry and blackberry flavors show very good clarity, picking up a smoky nuance with air. Finishes clean and nervy, with echoing mineral and licorice notes.
