About Salta: The Salta Province, in northwestern Argentina, has vineyards at the highest altitudes in the world. With an extreme desert climate, alluvial soils, intense sun, and low rain, this winemaking area is one of the most unique on the planet. Vineyards can be planted up to 10,000 feet. The white Torrontes grape excels in this climate, with great diurnal shifts that contribute to zippy acidity for the wines.

Hermanos 2012 Malbec/Tannat, Cafayate Valley
Rating: 87

While this is definitely a heavy wine with jammy aromas of sweet berry fruits, oak and cocoa powder, it's also a bit sticky and lactic on the palate, where dark, minty, herbal black-fruit flavors dominate. Prune notes and heat drive the finish on this Malbec-Tannat blend.
