Winemaking Notes: Made from grapes harvested from the Vicuña vineyards in the mid-valley. Each varietal is fermented in separate stainless steel tanks with four days of cold maceration to achieve the best fruit extraction. Instead of the traditional pumping over method, they use punch downs to preserve the best tannins, color extraction and expression of terroir possible. The Syrah is partially aged in French oak barrels and the Carmenere is also partially aged in American oak for five months.

Tasting Notes: Made in a style similar to old world Italian, this is a very fruit driven wine that is juicy (not jammy) with a nice dark color and a perfect balance of body, soil tannins and oak character. Intense ripe blackberry and plum fruits with a touch of vanilla and spice. Pair with grilled meats and Mediterranean dishes.

About the Elqui Valley: Elqui Valley borders the Atacama Desert, the best place in the world for stargazing because there is so little water vapor in the atmosphere. Elqui is one of the newest regions for producing wine in Chile; long home to the best Pisco grapes, they have successfully ventured into this extreme terroir over the past 15 years.

About the Winery: The Olivier family started Viña Mayu in 2005 and were the first to bring winemaking to the Elqui Valley. They honor the place and its history with the name of the winery - "Mayu" is the Inca word for the Milky Way's “river of stars”. The driving force for Mayu was transforming a tract of extreme terroir with enormous potential into a vineyard producing premium wines.
