About the Vinho Verde DOC: This region in Northwest Portugal is known for wines that are light, acidic, slightly effervescent, and often drunk when young. The rain-bearing westerly winds coming in from the Atlantic make this a densely populated and densely planted area. To accommodate the crowding, vines are grown high in pergola formation. The DOC has a variety of grapes: Alvarinho, Loureiro, Trajadura, Pederna, and Avesso. With the exception of Alvarinho from Monção, wines can’t exceed 11.5% alcohol by volume. Until the 1980s, most Vinho Verde was actually red, and it’s still drunk locally but not commonly exported.
