About the Rheinhessen: Large and varied region in Germany stretching from Bodenheim to the outskirts of Worms that often produces wine in bulk. Its most famous vineyards are in the red shale soils of Nierstein, with excellent eastern exposure on the Rhine. Its hills to the west protect it from excessive rain and wine. Aromas of peach, citrus, and smoky meats characterize these Riesling wines. To the north, the district of Ingelheim makes notable Spatburgunder/Pinot Noir. The region’s highest vineyards are in the “Rheinhessian Switzerland.” A significant number of Germany’s organic and biodynamic winemaking has come from the Rheinhessen. There are over 400 individual vineyard sites in the region. Muller-Thurgau is the most widely grown grape, but increasingly you’ll find more red varietals. Read more on the Rheinhessen wine region.
