Vineyard Sources: 91% Weinbau Vineyard, 6% Ciel du Cheval Vineyard, 3% Tapteil Vineyard

Aging: Wine is aged in 100% French oak, 20% new, 25% second vintage and 55% third vintage barrels, coopered from select forests of Taransaud, Orion, Sylvain and Vicard for 18 months

Winemaking Notes: Crushed gently and dropped by gravity into 1.5 ton bins, cold soaked 48 to 72 hours, then inoculated with a variety of yeasts, hand punched and pressed directly to barrel where the wine finished both primary and secondary fermentation. After 12 months of barrel aging the best barrels of the separate lots of Cabernet Franc were combined and allowed to coalesce for an additional 6 months before bottling at 18 months of bottle age.

Vintage Notes: A cold spring put the grapes way behind at bloom, set and veraison. A mild summer with weeks of ideal grape ripening conditions began to catch the fruit up but harvest still began 4 weeks later than normal. The weather was gorgeous through harvest, the first freeze not arriving until Thanksgiving, well after the finish of the harvest.

Tasting Notes: Aromas of succulent red fruit, especially raspberry and intricacies of clove followed by explosive tart cherry pie on the palate with light dashes of anise and bay leaf. A long finish highlighted by lithe acidity, delicate herbal notes and hints of melon rind with supple tannins.

Good bright red. Aromas of redcurrant and dried flowers are a bit weighed down by smoky oak. Fresh and fruit-forward, with floral and saline nuances to the red berry flavors. Essentially supple and juicy in the middle, finishing with a note of nutty oak. Still young.

While not up to the 2010, the 2011 Cabernet Franc is nevertheless rock solid and a good value. Made from 100% Cabernet Franc and aged in 20% new oak, with the balance mostly 2-3 years old barrels, it is a big, voluptuous and softly textured effort that has beautiful fruit, excellent complexity and a medium to full-bodied, mouth-filling texture. Hard to resist, it should have 4-5 years of evolution. Drink now-2018.
