Winemaking Notes: In 2012, Eric Bouletin released an entry level Vacqueyras "La Grande Terre" more approachable in its youth than the Restanques. Very elegant wine, almost more Burgundian than Rhodanien.
Bouletin does not use chemicals, synthetics or commercial additives in the cellar or on the vineyard. This is a single parcel of 55 year-old Grenache and 30 year-old Syrah and Mourvèdre.
Eric does not use chemicals, synthetics or commercial additives in the cellar or on the vineyard. Tasting Notes: Scarlet in color, there’s a sweet cherry nose with a hint of smoke. It evolves further into licorice and baking spices. Food Pairing: Sirloin Strip Roasts with Roquefort Mushrooms
About Vacqueyras AOC:
Originally part of the Cote du Rhone appellation, this was only the second region in the Southern Rhone to achieve its own AOC designation (after Gigondas). It is known for mostly red varietals, though it also produces white and rose. In a red Vacqueyras AOC, only half the grapes have to be Grenache, the rest are usually Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault. These wines tend to be slightly more rustic than many Gigondas, but have similar appellation guidelines to that and Chateauneuf-du-Pape, so it tends to be a great value for the region.

Roucas Toumba 2011 'La Grande Terre' Vacqueyras AOC
Rating: 89
A classic, traditional effort that has plenty of saddle leather, licorice, ground herbs, pepper and spice box, the 2011 Vacqueyras Le Grand Terre (a tank-aged blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre) is medium-bodied, lightly textured and has loads of character. Med-weight in style, with savory tannin, it should be given another year in bottle and enjoyed through 2019.
