Concept: Mid 19th century spirits were filtered in a primarily limestone medium before charcoal become du rigueur. Local Wine and Spirits makes The Exchange vodka in a text book, classic style from corn and rye that has an insanely amazing texture and hints of sweetness. Local filters with limestone and tiny amounts of charcoal which adds this soft and nearly velvet texture on the mouth. Local is proud to offer you this Cognac copper pot distilled vodka.
History of the Name: By the mid 1800’s the Temperance movement had gained significant momentum and those Americans that wanted to imbibe without the pejorative social stigma of “drinking” began creating code names for bars. Famed barman Jerry “the Professor” Thomas worked at the Exchange at Barnum’s Museum in New York’s lower Manhattan where he mixed punches, toddies, juleps and cocktails. Soon every major city in America had bars named “Exchange,” where one could tell their spouses and friends alike that they were busy working at the “Exchange” till late in the night.
Distillery: Ransom distillery is located in Sheridan, OR. Sheridan is a small, sleepy town that butts up against the coastal mountain range in northwest Willamette Valley. The distillery sits on 40 acres of gentle, rolling farmland, and Tad operates a beautiful 150 gallon copper pot still to create his spirits. It is a classic small batch spirit operation. There are the essentials of the distillery, an extra cocktail book or two, a shotgun and a tractor. When you have a good spirit in hand, a coastal breeze to cool the sweat from your brow and a vista of the valley what more do you really need?
Distillation: We begin our vodka with a base of corn and rye neutral spirits. It passes through our copper pot three times in order to refine it and give it the elegance and simplicity that a pure vodka should have. Our filtration medium is very unique; a combination of limestone and charcoal that not only removes all unwanted microscopic particles from our distillate but yields a near velvety texture on the palate that cannot be achieved with the efficiencies of 21st century modern filtration.
