Left Foot Charley

Country of Origin: USA
Location: Traverse City, Michigan
People: Brian & Jen Ulbrich, Owners | Bryan Ulbrich, Winemaker | Drew Perry, Oenologist

Left Foot Charley winery was created in 2004 by winemaker Bryan Ulbrich, who was called upon by a new vineyard owner to help save his Riesling crop from imminent disaster. From this, Ulbrich’s first batch of dry Riesling was born.

Since then, Left Foot Charley, named for Ulbrich’s clumsy childhood, has teamed up with 18 Michigan growers to produce wines that express the unique terrain of the glacially tilled hills of Michigan. He works specifically with farmers who are taking steps to understand and define terroir in this region, which is influenced by the lake effect and soil composition.

Bryan Ulbrich is called the "Winery Sherpa." He’s been in the biz since 1993, and he’s the vision behind the winery. His wife, Jen, organizes the financial side of the operation and wrangles their two kids. The winery is located in the former Michigan Asylum for the insane in Traverse City, Michigan, and focuses on white varietals, hard cider, and sparkling wine.
