Daniel Wagner, owner and winemaker, is making weighty, sensational ‘Nahe-ike’ wines which are already among the best in the Rheinhessen. We believe he will be one of the next superstars in this region.

The Estate is 12.5 hectares, in the western most district of the Rheinhessen, near Bernhard. Soils vary, but there is a significant vein of porphyry, similar to the great soils of the Nahe (which is just over the hill from this estate). Some think the worlds greatest Rieslings grow on volcanic soil in general and porphyry in particular.

The land here is steeper in this region and 95% of the Wagner-Stempel estate is picked by hand, managed by Oliver Muller, Estate Manager. Musts are clarified by gravity. The estate quality wines are made in stainless steel and many of his top wines see old oak. Cultured yeasts are used for the estate wines and spontaneous fermentation with wild yeast is the choice for the higher level wines. Most wines sit on lees until February.

In the Gault Millau / German Wine Guide the estate was voted newcomer of the year in 2009.

Wagner-Stempel 2012 Riesling Trocken (Dry), Rheinhessen, QbA
Rating: 89

Ripe citrus and glazed apricot flavors gives this good lift, showing plenty of minerality midpalate. Very spicy on the crisp finish, with lingering notes of lemon curd. Drink now through 2017. 3,000 cases made. - K.M.
