Michelle Rolland was first brought to Argentina and Cafayate by Arnaldo Erchart in 1988. Seduced by the remarkable potential of an old Malbec vineyard 6700 feet above sea level, Michel and Arnaldo created a partnership to make the wines of San Pedro de Yacochuya. From the 60-year old vines of Finca Yacochuya in Valles Calchaquies, the grapes are handpicked and the wines are aged in French oak barrels. Yachochuya wines were the first to be barrel-fermented in Argentina. These wines are the ultimate combination of the Finca Yacochuya vineyard, the Etchart family’s grape growing knowledge in this unique high-altitude region of Cafayate, along with the passion and expertise from one of the world’s pre-eminent winemakers, Michel Rolland.

San Pedro de Yacochuya 2005 'Yacochuya' Malbec, Yacochuya
Rating: 95

The 2005 Yacochuya (100% Malbec) spent 18 months in new French oak. It is a saturated opaque purple color with a brooding bouquet of mineral, wood smoke, lavender, incense, black cherry, and plum. Voluptuous and powerful on the palate, the wine is dense, rich, succulent, and impeccably balanced. It demands another 6-8 years of cellaring and will offer prime drinking through 2025, if not longer. I tasted a component tank sample of the 2007 and it, too, was spectacular.

San Pedro de Yacochuya 2009 Malbec, Yacochuya
Rating: 91

This heavy, baked Malbec-Cabernet Sauvignon blend carries all the fingerprints of winemaker Michel Rolland, a partner from the start in this high-end Salta project. Aromas of raisin and leather are rustic and rich. Flavors of mocha, molasses, cassis and chocolate finish with a syrupy feel. Drink sooner rather than later.

San Pedro de Yacochuya 2009 Malbec, Yacochuya
Rating: 90

The deep purple-colored 2009 Malbec is the estate’s entry-level wine and includes 15% Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend. It was aged for 12 months in 60% new French oak and bottled without fining or filtration. Asian spices, incense, licorice, lavender, and black cherry are just some of the elements composing the wine’s aromatic array. In the glass it is dense, rich, full-bodied, and powerful yet surprisingly light on its feet. It conceals enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years but can be approached now. It is an ideal match for one of Argentina’s unequaled free-range rib-eye steaks grilled over a wood fire.

San Pedro de Yacochuya is a partnership of the Etchart family and Michel Rolland. The average age of the vines is 60 years, and they are planted at 6700 feet of elevation (in the middle of nowhere, having visited here several years ago).
