Upright Brewing specializes in farmhouse inspired beers rooted in France and Belgium but made with local ingredients and with a Pacific Northwest twist. Using a special saison yeast and open fermenters we produce beers that are a true hybrid style. The name Upright is a reference to Charles Mingus and his primary instrument, a musician whose compositions also defy categorization.
The year-round beers are named after their starting gravity (density, or pre-fermentation sugar content) in Belgian brewing degrees. This method is a nod to the days when breweries solely distributed to their respective neighborhoods with nothing but a number on the cap to distinguish the beers – a time before the overly branded and global products of today. We hope that you appreciate the absence of gimmicks at Upright and enjoy the beers simply for what they are.
Alex Ganum is the owner and head brewer at Upright. He grew up drinking his father’s German pilsners and his older brother’s Bells Porter before moving to Portland in 2002. After meeting several home brewers he decided to give it a go and never looked back. Seven years later his love of brewing led him to open Upright, a brewery he thinks is as much a part of the community as it is personal. When he doesn’t have beer on his mind Alex is probably thinking about what’s next in the kitchen or on his plate and what digestive to wash it down with.
