About: Château Le Conseiller was purchased in 1996 by Jean-Philippe Janoueix of Lalande de Pomerol's Château Chambrun and St. Emilion's Château La Confession. Chateau Le Conseiller became known in 1881, but like many chateaux in the area, was never on the forefront of quality. Due to the exceptional soils and the vision of Mr. Janoueix, his ambition is to bring a new level to the appellation "Bordeaux Superieur," and integrate Le Conseiller among the top chateau in Bordeaux. Jean-Philippe received his MBA at the University of Connecticut and did a stage as assistant winemaker at Napa Valley's Far Niente Winery.

Acreage: 27 ha with an average vine age of 35 years. The winery is located in a critically overlooked Bordeaux Superieur appellation at the tip of the isthmus between the Dordogne and Gironde Rivers, just across the river from St. Emilion satellite appellations.

Soil: The soil is comprised of sandy clay loam. In 1996 partial blocks of the estate were planted to high density spacing of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

Climate: Cold marine micro-climates and high temperature fluctuations render a unique flavor profile of chocolate and cedar. Alcoholic fermentation is done in temperature controlled cement tanks on the skins for 5 weeks.
