Bodegas Vizcarra Ramos was founded by Juan Carlos Vizcarra in 1991. They own 64-acres (26 hectares) of vineyards in the town of Mambrilla and Roa in Burgos.

In town of Mambrilla, at an altitude of 2785 ft. Lying within the eastern sub-region of the Ribera del Duero DO (Zone #2), in Burgos province in Castilla.

The average temperature between April and October is 60.5F, with an annual rainfall level of 18.9 inches. The Ribera del Duero's (Burgos) eastern sub-region has a cooler climate than Rueda or Toro, due to its higher altitude. The wines produced here are usually darker, more concentrated and aromatic than wines made in the western part of Ribera del Duero. A continental climate with cool nights and hot days with moderately low rainfall, provides a longer ripening period, resulting in greater complexity and the evident expressive aromatic intensity.

Vizcarra Ramos 2011 'J.C. Vizcarra' Ribera del Duero DO
Rating: 91

Even though the 2011 JC Vizcarra is priced slightly higher than the cut-off point for this article, it merits attention as it is rare to find such a delicious Ribera del Duero priced under $35. Made from 100% Tempranillo, it exhibits abundant notes of vanillin, black currants, blackberries, incense and graphite. Medium to full-bodied, ripe and rich, it is ideal for drinking over the next 5-6 years.

Rating: 90

(raised for six months in used French and American oak): Opaque ruby. Smoke-accented aromas of black raspberry, cola and licorice. Broad and expansive in the mouth, offering juicy dark berry flavors and notes of cola and mocha. Finishes smooth and long, with resonating spiciness and soft, rounded tannins.

Vizcarra Ramos 2012 'Senda del Oro Roble' Ribera del Duero DO
Rating: 90

The 2012 Vizcarra Senda del Oro Roble (100% Tempranillo) was aged six months in French and American oak. Youthful, grapey and still slightly unformed, it tastes more like a barrel sample than a finished wine. Its dense ruby/purple color and big blast of black currant and blackberry fruit, licorice, vanillin and graphite are both impressive. The wine hits the palate with a suppleness as well as nicely textured opulence. It should drink nicely for 3-4 years.
