Country of Origin: USA
Location: Calistoga, Napa Valley
People: The Peterson Family, Owners | Robert Foley, Winemaker

Switchback Ridge wines are sourced exclusively from their estate Peterson Family Vineyard located directly across from the prestigious Three Palms Vineyard at the northeastern end of the Napa Valley in Calistoga. It is a beautiful 100-acre parcel of land that has been in the family since 1914 and located where the Silverado Trail intersects Dutch Henry Canyon Road. For over 75 years the property was maintained primarily as a prune orchard. Beginning in 1990 the remaining prune orchards were replanted with 20 acres of thriving Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petite Sirah vines. The rich, rocky soils of this beautiful vineyard property consistently produce low yields of intensely flavored fruit, resulting in extremely concentrated wines with explosive flavor on the palate. Not only are they blessed with an incredible vineyard site, but they are extremely fortunate to be working with one of the most talented winemakers in the industry. Robert Foley has been making their wines since the first vintage in 1999.

Switchback wines are vegetarian. No egg or fish products are used.

Switchback Ridge 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon, Peterson Family Vineyard, Napa Valley
Rating: 91(+?)

Good bright, dark red. High-toned aromas of crushed cassis, cocoa powder and licorice. Silky and elegant on the palate, with ripe, intense flavors of cassis, coffee bean and minerals underpinned by strong acidity. Lovely mid-palate lift here. Finishes with notes of licorice and fennel and serious tannic clout. From a blend of two blocks: mostly clone 7, which gives the wine its black fruit element and muscle, and some 337, which contributes bright acidity and more aromatic red fruits.

Offers a dense core of minerality tannins, framed by rich black currant fruit and marked with accents of grilled herb, olive and spice. Hands off for now. Best from 2015 through 2020.

Good dark red. Aromas of redcurrant, licorice and pencil lead smell quite dry. Then creamy in the middle, with a fine-grained texture and sappy freshness to the flavors of currant, mocha, tobacco and earth. Finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins and an exotic chocolate quality. I find this better-balanced than the 2009 version.
