Barco de Piedra comes from two plots north of the Duero between the towns of Pesquera del Duero and Valbuena. These vineyards range from 750m to 830m approximately 1000m north of the Duero and primarily south-facing. Within the Finca el QuiƱon estate there are several plots, two of which are used to produce Barco- a 2ha plot called Pago del Jaro (diverse mixture of Sand and clay soils), and a 40h plot called Pago de le Piedra (a highly eroded slope of limestone at the top, covered with river rock, and clay at the bottom).

Rating: 90

(aged for six months in a combination of French, American and Hungarian oak): Bright ruby. Sexy aromas of fresh dark berries and floral oils, with a licorice nuance adding depth. Sappy and precise, offering lively black raspberry and cherry flavors that show a refreshingly bitter edge. Finishes sweet and long, with smooth tannins adding shape.

(100% tempranillo, aged for five months in 3-year-old French and American oak barrels): Bright purple. Aromas and flavors of black and blue fruits, licorice and cracked pepper show full ripeness. Lush, creamy and fat, with a velvety texture and alluring sweetness. Finishes juicy and long, with fine-grained tannins adding grip.

Barco de Piedra 2011 Ribera del Duero DO
Rating: 91

A sensational value from Ribera del Duero (which rarely produces interesting wines for under $25), the 2011 Barco de Piedra is 100% Tempranillo aged five months in a combination of French and American oak (85% and 15% respectively), all three-year-old used barrels. It exhibits notes of flowers, licorice, new saddle leather, black currants and cherries. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, complex and on a fast maturity curve, it should be consumed over the next 2-3 years.
