In winemaking, two heads are definitely better than one when trying to make an incredible wine. Longtime friends and winemakers Pepe Galante and Mariano Di Paola recently banded together to bring well over 40 years of winemaking expertise to their Mapema wine. Theirs is a history of rich individual accomplishments; Pepe and Mariano are widely recognized as two of Argentina's most talented winemakers. They joined forces with one thought in mind: take the expertise and experience of two seasoned winemakers, search out the best possible grape sources (in the "primera zona" or top viticultural area), and make just one super wine from each harvest. The name "Mapema" is a combination of the first two letters of the partners' first names.

Quick Facts:
-Made by two of Mendoza's premier head winemakers
-Long time friends who collaborate on these labors of love after they finish their day jobs.
-Drastically cut yields on usually over-cropped varieties.

Mapema 2011 Malbec, Mendoza
Rating: 87

Bright medium ruby. Very ripe, slightly nutty aromas and flavors of black raspberry, chocolate and licorice. Sweet and soft on the palate, in need of a bit more clarity. Finishes with a fine dusting of slightly dry tannins.

Mapema 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, Mendoza

Pale yellow. Dusty lemon zest, grapefruit, fresh herbs and hints of honey and spices on the lively nose. Juicy and refreshing, offering good dusty grip and volume to the flavors of citrus fruits and underripe pineapple. Much more fruit intensity and ripeness here than in the 2012 version. Finishes with notes of grapefruit, raw pineapple and lemongrass and sneaky persistence. This was aged in 25% new oak (the rest in stainless steel) for three months but the wood element is quite subtle. An excellent value.
